Ode On Solitude

Class 10 English (Poetry) - Poem 2

Poet: Alexander Pope

📜 About the Poem & Poet

Alexander Pope was one of the greatest satirists of the 18th century. Interestingly, he wrote this poem when he was just 12 years old. In "Ode On Solitude," he describes the life of a truly happy man. According to him, happiness lies in living a quiet, simple life in one's own village, far away from the noise and worries of the world.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

B.1. Short Answer Questions

Q1. Who is a happy man?

Ans: A happy man is one whose wish and care are bound to a few paternal acres, and who is content to breathe his native air in his own ground.

Q2. Whom does the poet call a happy man?

Ans: The poet calls a man happy who lives a self-sufficient life, gets milk from his herds, bread from his fields, and clothes from his flocks (sheep).

Q3. How does the poet wish to live and die?

Ans: The poet wishes to live unseen and unknown. He wants to die unlamented (without anyone mourning), and he desires that not even a stone should tell where he lies.

C.1. Long Answer Questions

Q1. Describe the life of a happy man as depicted in the poem.

Ans: A happy man lives a simple and peaceful life. He is not ambitious to earn money or fame. He is satisfied with the land he inherited from his forefathers. He is self-dependent; his fields provide him food, his cattle give him milk, and his trees give him shade and firewood. He enjoys sound sleep, good health, and peace of mind. He balances his life with study and rest.

Q2. "Thus let me live, unseen, unknown." Why does the poet say so?

Ans: The poet says this because he values peace and solitude more than fame and popularity. He believes that public life is full of noise, criticism, and artificiality. He wants to live a quiet life where no one disturbs him. He wants to disappear from the world so silently that no one even knows he existed, finding true happiness in anonymity.

Q3. What is the central idea of the poem 'Ode On Solitude'?

Ans: The central idea is that true happiness comes from satisfaction, simplicity, and self-sufficiency. A person who runs after wealth and fame is never happy. Real joy lies in living close to nature, enjoying good health, peace of mind, and the company of books (study) and leisure, away from the crowded world.
