Spare the Rod

Read, Think & Enjoy - Lesson 1

Author: Dr. Trinath Mishra

👨‍👦 About the Story

"Spare the rod and spoil the child" is a famous proverb which means if you don't punish a child, they will become spoiled. In this story, the author Dr. Trinath Mishra challenges this old idea. It describes a traditional father who believes in strict physical punishment but later realizes that love and understanding are more effective than beating.

(Transformation):

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Short Answer Questions

Q1. What is the meaning of "Spare the rod and spoil the child"?

Ans: It means that if a child is not physically punished (beaten) for their mistakes, they will get spoiled and develop bad habits.

Q2. Why was the narrator afraid of his father?

Ans: The narrator was afraid because his father was very strict and believed in severe physical punishment for even small mistakes.

Q3. Did the punishment help the narrator?

Ans: No, the punishment did not help. Instead of correcting him, it made him fearful, secretive, and distant from his father.

Long Answer Questions

Q1. Describe the relationship between the narrator and his father.

Ans: The relationship was based on fear rather than love. The father acted like a strict disciplinarian who thought beating was the only way to teach. The son lived in constant terror of making mistakes. There was no friendly communication or understanding between them during the narrator's childhood.

Q2. How did the author's view on punishment change?

Ans: As the author grew up and became a parent himself, he realized that physical torture is not the right way to raise a child. He understood that children need love, patience, and guidance. Severe punishment only crushes a child's confidence and creates a gap between parent and child.

Q3. What message does the story convey?

Ans: The story conveys that physical punishment ("the rod") is an outdated and harmful method of teaching. It suggests that understanding a child's psychology and treating them with kindness is much more effective. "Spared the rod" does not mean spoiling the child; it means respecting the child.
